A Home Filled with Nostalgic Art ~ Collecting art for a reason!
Why do some people collect art and others don’t? Why do some people collect a specific kind of art? Both are questions artists often wonder about. Fortunately, there are collectors out there who do buy art, and have to have a work of art that speaks to them.
Early in my career, I was lucky and had a collector collect my Maine art. When I started specializing in maritime art, fortunately that same collector was passionate about ships. Anything “Maine” or having to do with ships and lighthouses would catch his eye. His love of Maine went all the way back to childhood and fond visits with his grandparents. Shipbuilding, schooners, working harbors, and lighthouses were all a fascination to a little kid from away.
Successful artists usually have the same passion as the collector. The artist spends endless hours painting something he/she loves, hoping that in the end someone else will feel the same connection as they do.
Observing the art in people’s homes is always fascinating. It can tell you a lot about a person, and also lead to getting to know that person better. Are they sentimental? Do they love the water or the mountains, and if so, why?
Jen and I recently had the pleasure of touring a beautiful home that my brother Tom built a few years ago. While we were admiring my brother’s handiwork and oohing and ahhhing over the house, I was also taking in all of the artwork on the wall. The home was filled with Nostalgic Art. We were in the home of a collector, someone with a passion for art and a specific kind of art.
Nostalgic Art is about a longing for the good old days, simpler and more peaceful times, when billboards with our favorite products adorned the countryside. Nostalgic Art can be collectible memorabilia ranging from Coca-Cola signs, cigar tins, tobacco signs, posters of American products/old movies/movie stars, etc...
Lithograph prints and painted tins from the good old days helped make this beautiful house their home.
Whether an artist is painting Nostalgic Art, Pop Art, Maritime, Landscapes, or Aviary art, all an artist can hope for is to reach others who feel that same passion for the subject they love so much.
A great way to stay positive as an artist it to know there are others out there, who have similar passions and interests as you do. The key is putting that passion into the work and doing the best work possible.
Thanks as always for your interest in my art, my photography, and my journal!
