A Birder and Wildlife Artist Extraordinaire ~ Robert Bateman!
My safari on a budget blog was done slightly tongue in cheek. When I said not every artist can afford to travel to Africa to the wild game preserves or travel to South America to go birding that is the truth. However, if “what you are into” as an artist benefits from travel it can make all the difference in your art.
A perfect example is Robert Bateman. He was the first wildlife artist I became familiar with when I started drawing and painting. He has spent a lifetime outdoors, with the birds and mammals. He has traveled the world, educating himself, teaching others, and helping save the environment.
He is a living legend in the wildlife art world. He has painted it all. He has an expansive museum in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, featuring his artwork.
Years ago, I bought one of his books, Robert Bateman – An Artist in Nature, which is full of images of his wonderful paintings. It is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in pursuing wildlife art, whether it be birds or animals.
My photographs at the NC Zoo prompted images of Bateman’s paintings in my head when I was putting together my Zoo blog. I subsequently went back to flip through his book and here are some of the images that caught my eye. His paintings are incredible!
